Project
To replicate a decorative 17th ceiling which was hidden behind a more recent ceiling. The peculiarity of the ceiling was that it was painted with hide glue in near perfect condition.
The Work –
  • introduce a camera inbetween the two ceilings and photograph the whole of the hidden ceiling
  • make a drawing from the montaged photographs with a few adaptations for a replica in a slightly differently shaped location from the original
  • realise the copy of the ceiling in the new location in hide glue and pigment

The Hidden Ceiling Recreated
The Original

To be able to copy the painting we had to introduce a digital camera between the two ceilings and the little by little slide it down between the beams, taking a photograph

approximately every 50 cms. This was done between each set of beams of the ceiling, and the image of the ceiling was reconstituted in this manner.

From the photographs a drawing of the original ceiling was made, but with a few adpatations for the new site where we were to realise the replica ceiling.

The Evolution Of The Ceiling
The Hide Glue Paint Process

The composition of the painting stays as faithful to the original as possible, though slight changes had to be made to accommodate the dimensions of the new site.

Sections of the original painting that have been lost were created to complete the ceiling.

A hide glue medium was used in executing the ceiling.  It is a combination of hide glue and water, which when heated, is mixed with dry pigments.
