Adaptation Of An 18th C Dutch Chinoiserie Style Decorative Mirror

This mirror was adapted after an original 18th Century Decorative Mirror which consisted of a main lower mirror and a portion of a top main chimney ornament. It had a curved base and was missing decorative elements.

To start a moulded copy of the original frame was created; the moulds were made with silicone rubber and fibre reinforced plaster shells. The copy of the original mirror frame was cast in plaster.

Using the elements of the cast copy, the base of the mirror was adapted to fit the mantle of the chimney in the new interior where it was to be installed. The original mirror was designed to fit a curved mantel, where as the new chimney had a flat mantel.

Over time, the original mirror had lost pieces of ornamentation. These missing elements were re-sculpted using historic photographs of the complete mirror for reference. The missing elements included part of the mirrors central ornament, as well as a variety of smaller ornamental details throughout the mirror. These missing ornaments were sculpted in plasticine and wax onto the moulded copy. New moulds were then made with silicone rubber, plaster and fibres. The final casting was done in polyurethane.

This was an addition requested by the client. The elements used to create this frame were based directly on the original mirror as well as a piece of the main chimney ornament that was in the interior where the original mirror was displayed. The client had a piece of the original ornament, though a significant portion was missing. A moulded copy of the fragment was made. Based on historical photographs, we completed this ornament and incorporated it into the extension of the frame and the chimney moulding.
The frame was sculpted with wax and plaster elements from the moulded copy of the mirror. Moulds were made with silicone rubber, plaster and fibres.
The frame was cast in polyurethane.

Once the final mirror was installed it was painted with gold paint.

To complete the ornamentation of the room, an original 18th Century Style Decorative Floral Door Ornament was created. The rocaille was adapted after a similar ornament displayed elsewhere in the house. The floral decoration around the rocaille was adapted after floral ornaments from other existing ornaments.

The ornament was sculpted in wax. A mould was made using silicone rubber, plaster and fibres. The ornament was cast in polyurethane.

Once installed, the ornament was painted with oil paint and gold paint.
