Project

Our client wished to have a set of picture frames that was an adaptation of a set of 18th Century decorative floral frames on display at the Van Loon Museum in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

The frames were to adorn paintings based on the myth of Dido and Aeneas, which we created for the client’s main drawing room.

The Work –
  • with the cooperation of the museum, to photograph and study the original frames and fabricate eight new frames based on this research.
  • sculpt replicas of the original frames, make moulds and cast them.
  • create, make moulds and cast new decorative elements to be incorporated into the replica frames to create adaptations of the museum frames that fit the esthetic of the originals and concorded with the desires of the client.
  •  finish and paint all the elements together.
  • to install and fit all the finished elements together on the wall panels around the paintings.

The Sculpting Of The Frames
The Main Decorative Flourishes

The decorative elements of the frames were created in two stages;

  • the first stage was sculpting, moulding and casting the main decorative flourishes
  •  the second stage was sculpting, moulding and casting the floral ornamentation.
The Floral Ornaments

The floral ornaments were fabricated separately at the client’s request so that they could be used interchangeably to adapt new frames in the future.

  • they were sculpted in plasticine and wax
  • moulds were made using silicone rubber and plaster
  • castings were made from these in polyurethane resin.

Finishing and Fitting The Frames
Finishing & Painting

Once all of the decorative and floral ornaments were cast, the two types were joined together to create the full final ornaments of the frame.

All the elements had to go through the process of sanding and finishing prior to being painted.

The parts were primed and then painted. The colours were those of the wooden moulding, and then gold paint on all the decorative and floral elements.

The Installation

The ornaments, once painted in oil paint and gold paint, were attached to the wooden moulding and installed on the wall around the paintings.
